'Jana Sevana' Housing Programme which implemented under the "Mahinda Chinthana" concept has launched in the following 12 administrative districts of the island considering on poverty condition of these districts.

This has implemented under the 90 days crash programme on housing sector.  On the 1^st phase of this programme, 20 housing units will be constructed in a cluster basis in each of these districts.

  20 poverty stricken families will construct their houses in each of these districts and National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) will provide Rs. 50,000/- ( 500Us$ ) grant and roofing sheets for each of these houses along with the technical assistance and with the participation of house-holder families.

  Under the guidance of Minister of Housing & Construction Mrs. Ferial Ashraff,  Ministry of Housing & Construction will co-ordinate this programme.  250 housing units will be constructed in the above 12 districts under this programme and the construction work of these houses has commenced on 15^th January 2006 at once.

The NHDA said that they are planned to complete the construction work of these houses by 10^th of March and the ownership of these houses will be handed over to house-holders on 18^th March 2006.  Based on the experiences of the above programme, the NHDA expects to implement 'Diri Sevana' programme in all other districts from 2^nd week of February 2006.
