Minister of Housing & Construction, Mrs. Ferial Ashraff ceremonially opened the  ‘Army Ela’ housing scheme at Tangalle and ‘Jayavikumgama’ housing scheme at Embilipitiya recently (14th March).

These are the 1st housing schemes officially opened by the Minister of Housing & Construction under the Jana Sevana housing programme implemented by the NHDA in 12 under privilege districts of the island with the assistance of Ministry of Housing & Construction.

Minister, Mrs. Ferial Ashraff who arrived to open the ‘Army Ela’ housing scheme of Tangalle was welcomed by the Minister of New Railway Track Development and Deputy Minister of Urban Development & Water Supply, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera and later Minister Mrs. Ferial Ashraff inspected the housing scheme.

When the Minister of Housing & Construction arrived to open the ‘Bandakkayaya Jayavikumgama’ of Embilipitiya was received by the Minister of Textile Industries and Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development, Mr. Jayatisssa Ranaweera.

After the ceremonial openings of above 02 housing schemes Minister Mrs. Ferial Ashraff said “The Mahinda Chinthana put forwarded by the President His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse during the presidential election period has included overall development activities of Sri Lanka.  This has been mainly focussed on the overall development of villages where the majority of people are living.  When we implemented the Jana Sevana programme based on Mahinda Chinthana has given priority to the housing development activities in villages.

It is targeted to complete the accelerated housing development programme within 90 days.  But with the assistance of the village householders, this has been completed within 60 days.  This programme can be pointed out as a success of combine effort of various organizations and communities.  The government institutions such as NHDA has provided the financial and technical assistance to construct these houses.  The village level political leadership has provided an exemplary leadership for this programme.  We can achieve success in whatever development programme, if it is implemented unitedly without any discrimination.

Whatever development programmes implemented, it will not be success unless there is a long lasting peace in this country.  We must give the fullest co-operation to President His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse for his peace effort and we must help to find the peaceful solution for this national crisis without any discrimination.”

Deputy Minister of Housing & Construction, Mr. Gunaratne Weerakoon, Minister of New Railway Track Development and Deputy Minister of Urban Development & Water Supply, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera  and Minister of Textile Industries and Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development, Mr. Jayatissa Ranaweera also spoke on this occasion.
