A
project funded by the Federal Republic of Germany under the
German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) to construct 1200 houses
for families displaced by the Tsunami in Batticaloa and each
parts of Sri Lanka was successfully implemented.
This programme
has implemented at Kalmunai, Walachchenai and Kalkuda
divisional secretariat areas. The National Housing
Development Authority (NHDA) will provide technical guidance
for the families concerned to build their own houses.
Under this programme each displaced family will receive Rs.
200,000/- by the government of Sri Lanka and other Rs.
250,000/- from the Federal Republic of Germany under the GTZ
programme.
Each
of this house under this programme has an extent of 500
sq.ft. Materials such as cement bricks are being
systematically prepared at the project site by the members
of the beneficiary families. Youth members of this
beneficiary families were trained as carpenters and masons
and they build their houses with the assistance of other
family members. Within last 03 months a preliminary
construction work of these houses has been completed. NHDA
says that they expected to complete most of these houses
before the end of this year.
