         Tsunami  Houses

Objective:
Construction of new houses and carrying out repairs to partially damaged houses for re-sheltering nearly one million Tsunami affected persons.
Project Description:
The coastal belt of Sri Lanka was devastated by the attack of Tsunami on 26th December 2004. The disaster struck heavily in districts of Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ampara, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee in Southern and Eastern parts of the island. Over 40,000 people have confirmed dead while more than one million families were rendered homeless. The number of houses that need complete reconstruction or heavy repairs is close to 35, 000 according to rough estimates. Approximate district figures of destroyed houses are as follows.

Since most of the houses completely destroyed were without a firm structure or foundation, it is of utmost important that any new construction should be carried out in a suitable location with a strong foundation. Detailed information is being worked out Divisional Secretariat wise in order to prepare action plans
