The proposed new
housing development programme of the National Housing
Development Authority to be implemented in North under the
“Uthuru Wasanthaya” 180 days accelerated development
programme was commenced on 24th June, in
Pallimune village in Mannar district with the initiation of
Mr.Nicholes Pillei, District Secretary, Mannar.

The new houses
will be built with a financial assistance of Rs: 325,000 per
family and will be given to 50 displaced fisheries families
due to conflicts in Mannar district, and now living in
temporary houses. This Housing Development programme will
be implemented under the directions of Special Task Force
for accelerated northern development headed by Mr.Basil
Rajapakse, Senior Advisor to the president and Member of
Parliament and under the supervision of Minister of Housing
and Common Amenities Mrs. Ferial Ashraff. This programme
was inaugurated by laying foundation stones for several
houses. The NHDA has planned to complete the development
programme of Pallimunai village within a period of 100 days.

Pillai, District Secretary Mannar, expressing his views at
this occasion said the benefits of the “Uthuru Wasanthaya”
programme will be disseminated to the other parts of the
districts of the north as well as district of Mannar and
further said implemention of a accelerated housing
development programme under the “Uthuru Wasanthaya”
programme is an important event. This development programme
has been anticipated for a long time by the people of Mannar.
Further he said every one should contribute to make this
programme a success and specially those who need houses
should participate in this programme. The government too
expects such a successful development programme.

Mr.L.S.Palansooriya, General Manager, NHDA expressing his
views said under the directions of Senior Advisor to the
President Mr. Basil Rajapakse the NHDA has been assigned a
special task to provide housing facilities to displaced
people of North under the “Uthuru Wsanthaya” National
Development Programme. The National Housing Development
Authority will carry out this task under the directions of
the Minister of Housing and Common Amenities Mrs. Ferial
Ashraff to provide permanent houses for displaced persons
who are now in temporary houses. Today we have commenced
the first new housing project in Mannar under the “Uthuru
Wasanthaya” development programme to be implemented in 180
days. Our Authority aims to complete construction work of
this housing project within 100 days. Accordingly house
plans and common amenities are being prepared by the
Ministry of Housing and Common Amenities and the success of
this programme is in the hands of recipients of these
houses.
NHDA has already
identified suitable families for the housing project at
Pallimunai according to the “Uthuru Wasanthaya” housing
programme. Financial assistance and technical know-how is
being given to commence construction of houses shortly. The
NHDA has already made arrangements to supply building
materials to the relevant site and the recipient of the
houses will be involved in making building materials. The
labour requirement will be met by the members of the
beneficiary families.
The
infrastructure facilities such as roads, water and drains
will be make available by the relevant government
institutions with the co-ordination of District’s Secretary
Mannar.
The NHDA has made
arrangements to start housing projects in parallel to this
programme of housing in Mannar district as well as in
Vauniya district. A training programme for technical
officers will b e held within next few days in Mannar and
Vauniya districts.
