The 13th model village under "Gam Udawa" programme was declared open as "Edirimanagama" at Bamunakotuwa DS Division of Kurunegala District by Hon. Minister of Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa on the invitation of Hon. Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction Indika Bandaranayake yesterday (04.11.2016). Kurunegala District is the first district in which the first model village under Gam Udawa of Late President Ranasinghe Premadasa was erected.
Cement distribution for the reconstruction of houses of low income families, financial assistance for rehabilitation of houses and distribution of deeds of ownership of houses, which was organized under the “Samata Sevana” programme, took place at Pradeepa Hall, Modara, Colombo today (28/10/2016). This event was organized by the National Housing Development Authority and the picture shows Minister of Finance Mr. Ravi Karunanayake distributing the cement bags, deeds and financial installments for the recipient families.
The Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority Mr. L.S. Palansuriya and the other officials who participated in this event are also in the picture.
Habitat III United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development took place in Quito Ecuador from 17th to 20th October, 2016. This conference is a bi-decennial conference and Habitat I was held at Vancouver, Canada in 1976 and Habitat II was held at Istanbul, Turkey in 1996.
More than 35,000 foreign delegates participated in this conference. The Sri Lankan delegation for this conference was led by Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction Mr. Indika Bandaranayake and Chairman of National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) Mr. L.S. Palansuriya and Deputy General Manager of National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) Mr. K.A. Janaka were the other members of the Sri Lankan delegation.
Mr. Rafair Corya, President of the Republic of Ecuador, inaugurated the Habitat III Conference. More than 150 state leaders, ministers and officials addressed the inauguration and the plenary session within the 04 days of this conference and Deputy Minister Mr. Indika Bandaranayake was one of the delegates who spoke at the plenary session.
Mr. Indika Bandaranayake adressing the inaugural session said that:
"After nearly four decades of ethnic conflict and uncertainty, Sri Lanka has embarked on comprehensive development effort throughout the country. The government of His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena has launched a multi-facetted program of balance development. In this envisage program, human settlement and shelter development and especially the management of urban growth have been identifying as key areas of focus. Accordingly, the government is actively promoting urban centers distributed amongst the strategic locations as a development strategy in association with a comprehensive shelter and infrastructure development effort."
"His Excellency the President has declared 2017 as the year of poverty alleviation and the Ministry of Housing and Construction as the Ministry responsible for "Housing the Nation" is in the process of enabling the low income and marginalized rural communities under the "Samata Sevana" national housing program to build their own houses with the family labor, community support and the utilization of their own resources. The program will further expanded towards the alleviation of rural sector poverty through livelihood improvement with the participation of stakeholders involving in related programs and projects. In line with the rural sector housing program, the Ministry is also in the process of developing a housing program targeting the urban slums and shanty communities who are trapped in vicious circle of poverty in addition to the construction of 500,000 for the urban middle income communities through the public private partnership mechanism.
This was the first United Nations global summit after the adaptation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. It offered a unique opportunity to discuss the important challenge of how cities, towns and villages are planned and managed, in order to fulfill their roles as drivers of sustainable development, and how they can shape the implementation of the new global development goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The New Urban Agenda, along with the formulation of policies, plans and programmes at the local, national, regional, and international levels were taken into consideration with the role of sustainable urbanization as a driver of sustainable development, urban-rural linkages and the interlinkages among the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development in promoting stable, prosperous and inclusive societies.
In memory of Dimbulagala Siri Seelalankara Thero, who dedicated the life towards the betterment of society and Buddhism, the 12th Model Village "Siri Seelalankara Nahimigama", 19th Canal, Dimbulagala, Polonnaruwa, implemented under the guidance of Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister, was declared open by His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of Sri Lanka on the invitation of Hon. Sajith Premadasa, Minister of Housing and Construction yesterday (24th October,2016).
"19 Ela Model Village" in Dimbulagala, Polonnaruwa has been constructed by the 30 families with the assistance of "Samata Sevana National Housing Programme".

This village will be ceremonially declared open by HE the President on 24th October, 2016.
HE the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Maithripala Sirisena ceremonially declared opened “Sugaladevigama” Model Village in Polonnaruwa district yesterday (03rd October) to commemorate the World Habitat Day – 2016.
The World Habitat Day celebrations were held from 1986 and this year World Habitat Day celebrations will celebrate 30 years of the annual celebrations. The United Nations has declared “Housing at the Centre” as the theme of this year’s World Habitat Day. Sri Lanka has continuously celebrated the World habitat Day more meaningfully and productively for the last 03 decades with the guidance of Ministry of Housing and Construction.
With the celebration of the World Habitat Day - 2016, on the invitation of Minister of Housing and Construction Mr. Sajith Premadasa, HE the President Mr. Maithripala Sirisena ceremonially declared opened “Sugaladevi Model Village” in Polonnaruwa which comprises 25 new houses with all the infrastructure facilities, electricity, road network and water etc.
At the opening of the model village, addressing the World Habitat Day – 2016 public gathering, HE the President stated that the year 2017 has been declared as “the Year for Alleviation of Poverty” and the government will give priority to build houses for the poorest of the poor community.
The land rights and the home ownership for all family householders in Sugaladevi Model Village, housing grants for 600 kidney patients, cement grants for 200 beneficiary families, tool kits for 250 Shilpa Saviya trainees and some other donations were distributed among the recipients by HE the President at this event. The total financial grants centered upon the model village opening in commemoration of the World Habitat Day – 2016 is Rs. 330M.
The Minister of Housing and Construction Mr. Sajith Premadasa , Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction Mr. Indika Bandaranayake, Chief Minister of North Central Province Mr. Peshala Jayarathne, State Minister of Irrigation, Water Management Mr. Wasantha Senanayake and thousands of public gathered to grace this event.
The government of Sri Lanka has declared Habitat Week from 03rd to 10th October and the National Housing Development Authority has made arrangements to carry out lot of shelter-related activities in the settlements and workshops and awareness programmes for the school children, youths and women in all parts of the country.
