Hon. Minister Sajith Premadasa and Hon. Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka took part in the ceremony of distributing financial grants and housing deeds among housing beneficiaries in Galle District.
Sri Lanka participated in the 25th Session of Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Kenya, Nairobi on 17th April, 2015.
The 25th Session was held in Nairobi, Kenya from 17th of April - 23rd of April. Sri Lanka is one of the pioneers of setting up the UN Habitat designated for the Housing and Human Settlement Activities of the UN member countries.
More than 250 member countries including Sri Lanka took part in UN Habitat Governing Council Session.
Sri Lankan delegation consisted of Mr. L.S. Palansuriya, Chairman of National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) , Mrs. Nandani Samarawickrama, Director (Housing) of Ministry of Housing and Samurdhi, K. Jeganathan, District Manager of NHDA, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Kenya and krishnamoorthi, representative of UN Habitat Sri Lanka.
"The contribution of UN-Habitat to the post-2015 development agenda: promoting sustainable urban development and human settlements" was the main theme of the conference and first sub theme of the conference was "Enhancing urban-rural linkages across the continuum of human settlements to harness the transformative power of urbanization for sustainable development."
The second sub theme of the sessions was "The Role of UN-Habitat in the Post-2015 Development Agenda."
Mr.L.S. Palansuriya, Chairman of National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) made a special presentation on the success of housing and settlement activities of Sri Lanka during the last decade. Through this presentation he made a special emphasis on 50,000 Housing Programme implemented by the NHDA and the Ministry of Housing and Samurdhi with the guidance of Hon. Sajith Premadasa, Minister of Housing and Samurdhi.
50,000 Housing Programme will be implemented with a limited financial expenditure by the State and with the maximum participation of housing beneficiaries and their savings. This programme will be inaugurated in all electorates under the 100 Days Government Development Programme.
The Sri Lankan delegation will expect to meet all UN high officials on human settlements and other delegates and officials of the UN representative countries to get the assistance and share the experience of the National Housing Programme of Sri Lanka.

NHDA Celebrated its 36th Anniversary recently. All night Pirith chanting ceremony was held at the National Housing Development Authority premises on 31st March 2015 to invoke blessings on the staff and the institution, followed by the morning alms giving to the Buddhist monks.
Hon. President Maithripala Sirisena, Hon. Sajith Premadasa, Minister of Housing and Samurdhi, Hon. Dilan Perera, State Minister of Housing and Samurdhi and Hon. M.S.S. Ameer Ali, Deputy Minister of Housing and Samurdhi participated in the ceremony of distributing financial grants and housing deeds among housing beneficiaries in Polonnaruwa District on 9th April 2015.
New office of Sevana Media Service Unit was declared open by the Additional Secretary (Housing Development) to the Ministry of Housing & Samurdhi, Mr. K.A. Thilakarathna at the 7th Floor of NHDA recently. (26th March)
Addressing the gathering, Chairman of NHDA, Mr. Luckvijaya Sagara Palansuriya said that the profit of Sevana Media Unit is deposited to the Sevana Fund for two decades & is credited to provide shelter facilities for poor people.
Sevana Media Unit, the only institution that provides advertisements & publicity under a state organization in Sri Lanka, has already started its duty in publishing advertisements of the affiliated institutions of Ministry of Housing & Samurdhi.
Chairman further said that the objective of Sevana Media Unit is to fulfill the advertising requirements of institutions under all the Ministries.
An event to present funds under the "Samata Sevanak" 50,000 Houses Programme took place in Kurunegala and Puttlam on Wednesday March 25th.
The event was held under the auspices of the Minister of Housing and Samurdhi, Sajith Premadasa. Housing beneficiaries in Kurunegala and Puttalam districts under "Samata Sevanak" 50,000 Houses programme were presented with funds.
The construction of 50,000 houses under the initiative of Minister Sajith Premadasa in line with 100-Days Programme is currently underway. Three hundred (300) houses are expected to be constructed in every electorate under this programme.
For the convenience of the General Public, a new public relations office of the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) was declared opened at the Head Office of NHDA, Colombo by the Chairman Luckvijaya Sagara Palansuriya recently (04th March).
The newly opened office provides its duties pertaining to the provision of answers for the issues of the public related to the housing and guidance of them to the relevant divisions if there are major issues.
The officers of higher management of NHDA took part in the event.
Mr. Lakvijaya Sagara Palansuriya assume duties as the Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority and Mr. H M Dayanada assume duties as the General Manager with effect from 21th January 2015.
Mr. Palansuriya’s diverse housing development experience expanding well over three decades includes several senior managerial positions such as General Manager, Deputy General Manager (Housing Development) at National Housing Development Authority. He also worked as Consultant to the Janasevana National Housing Secretariat which was under the Ministry of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities During 2011 to 2015.
