NEW HOUSE FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENT, STUDIED UNDER A ELECTRIC BULB
IN A POULTRY SHED
 
Inoka Ruwanthi Gamage
has never received paternal affection in her life. She has left
her mother at the age of seven and had spent her childhood days
in a childrens’ home in Anuradhapura Town leaving her home town
Padikaramaduwa, in Galenbindunuwewa. After 10 years, Inoka had
returned to her native village with her younger brother and had
lived in a dilapidated hut undergoing various difficulties
with her brother.
Inoka had done her
studies with the light of a electric bulb of a nearby poultry
shed of a livestock farm without sleep at night. She has
excelled in GCE (O/L) Examination and has passed GCE(A.L)
Examination with A passes for all subjects offered in commerce
stream. Today she is a student at university of Sri
Jayawardenepura, reading for Hon. degree in Estate Management.
In the year 2008, on
Womens’ Day Sanasa Bank had offered her a scholarship and it was
offered to her by the Minister of Housing and Common Amenities,
Mrs.Ferial Ashraff. In response to the request made by Inoka at
this occasion, Minister Ferial Ashraff instructed the National
Housing Development Authority (NHDA) to construct a permanent
house for her with the contributions from Sevana Fund and to
complete construction work within a short period of time. NHDA
was able to build this house worth nearly Rs.500,000/=, spending
Rs.200,000/=. Minister of Nation Building and Infrastructure
Development Mr.S.M.Chandrasena handed-over the ownership of the
house to Inoka Ruwanthi, mother and her brother on 25th
October. The General Manager, Mr.Sagara Palansuriya
representing NHDA, participated at this occasion.
Mr.Chandrasena
expressing his views said “We should appreciate the example
shown to us by the courageous child Inoka who stirred her life
for the future betterment undergoing various difficulties
throughout her life. I have no doubt that Inoka endowed with
self-reliance by her birth will do a fruitful service to the
country in future. This courageous daughter is an example not
only to the Rajarata but also to the whole country. Our
gratitude should go to the Minister of Housing and Common
Amenities, Mrs.Ferial Ashraff for providing ownership of a
permanent house for her. The furniture and the other utensils
required for her home will be provided to her shortly. As a
gesture to her sheer courage Ms.Inoka Ruwanthi will be offered a
suitable job on her graduation. The General Manager of the NHDA,
Mr.Sagara Palansuriya, Divisional Secretary, Galenbindunuwewa,
Mr.P.B.L.Gunaratne, and Senior District Manager of NHDA
Mr.R.Gunapala, too addressed the gathering.
