“NAGAMU PURAVARA” SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED FOCUSING
DEVELOPMENT OF COLOMBO CITY
The National Housing
Development Authority (NHDA) states that several projects of the
‘Nagamu Puravara’ programme has been speedily implemented to
provide basic amenities for under served settlements in the city
of Colombo, with the concept of His Excellency President
Mahinda Rajapakse.
492 under served
settlements in Colombo City have been identified to develop
under this programme and 354 settlements will be speedily
developed with the Phase I of this programme. Majority of these
projects will be developed with the assistance of the NHDA and
the Colombo Municipal Council. Development works of 91 projects
out of 354 projects will be carried out by the NHDA. NHDA has
made arrangements to identify the urgent projects in different
locations in Colombo city and will be commenced development
works shortly. Supplying of drinking water, renovation of
internal roads, development of community centres, renovation of
toilets and bathrooms will be carried out in parallel to this
redevelopment programme.
NHDA announced that
the development works of several projects commenced on 21st
February under the auspices of His Excellency the President has
been completed. The renovation works of Navagampura –
Orugodawatta, Summitpura – Mattakkuliya, Mohandiramwatta –
Kolpetty, 585 Watta – Baseline Road and Kirulapura – Kirulapona
has been completed. Restoration of common amenities will be
done by the householders of the respective housing project on
community contract basic. The householders get an opportunity
to participate themselves in this programme. All these
activities will be carried out under the supervision of the
Technical Officers of the NHDA. A programme to manage and
maintain the common amenities has been formulated on the
instructions of the Minister of Housing and Common Amenities,
Mrs. Ferial Ashraff. In this regard services of community
development committees will be obtained. Accordingly restored
services will be maintained and managed by the community
development councils of the respective housing schemes.
According to the
instructions of His Excellency the President the restoration
work has been commenced on 21st February and the
restoration work of the identified under served projects will be
completed within 05 weeks. NHDA states the experiences of these
projects will be utilized for the development of the under
served projects in the city of Colombo in future and this
development process will be implemented as a continuous
programme with the support of the other institutions who are
works in this :Nagamu Puravara” Programme. |
